Our History

Under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Arthur H. Charlton Jr., J.P., Mt Vernon Missionary Baptist Church met for the first time on Sunday November 4th, 2001 at The Papagayo Room, Clarion Resort (South Ocean Beach). There were twenty six (26) persons in attendance and seven (7) persons, namely Rev. Arthur, Sis. Dellarease, Laura and Ashton Charlton, Sis. Jennifer Winters, Sis. Rosie Miller and Bro. Kendal Smith, joined the ministry at this service.

This was an exciting time as the Lord brought together a group of people, who were committed to the mission of building a church both spiritually and physically. For the first two and a half months, all Sunday Worship services were held at the Papagayo Room, and the weekly activities were held at the residence of Rev. & Sis. Charlton, #5, Ivy Terrace, Sunset Park.

During this time, the need for the church to move to a more central location became apparent, and with this in mind, Mt. Vernon relocated to the Wong's Plaza, Madeira St., Palmdale in mid-January 2002.

On April 21, 2002, the church was commissioned by Rev. Dr. William Thompson, then President of The Bahamas National Baptist Missionary & Educational Convention, and Rev. Charlton was installed as the Church’s Pastor.

Pastor Charlton soon felt that the congregation of Mt. Vernon needed to move from under the stronghold of paying rent.  His vision became a reality with the assistance from Rev. Dr. William Thompson and The Bahamas National Baptist Missionary & Educational Convention and our first service was held at the Jordan Prince Williams School on Sunday, March 5, 2006.

Moving by faith we were able to secure a prime piece of property located on Faith Avenue, South, at the entrance of Pastel Gardens. Our ground breaking service was held on July 2, 2006, and the new sanctuary was dedicated for service to God on March 18, 2007 under the theme "Moving from Glory to Glory".

Presently, God is blessing our ministry in miraculous ways, and we are experiencing growth as a church. People are being saved, families are being restored and several new and exciting ministries have been introduced.

As we continue to follow the example Jesus Christ has set for us, which is to address the spiritual and social needs of men; we stand in awe of what God has done for us in the past, and continue to trust Him for our future.

Yes Friends, The Lord has done Great Things and it's Marvelous in our eyes!
